GLP-1 + GIP Weight Loss in Charlotte, NC: A Physician’s Perspective

If you’ve been searching for GLP-1 weight loss in Charlotte, NC, you’ve probably come across a lot of information and just as much confusion.

Semaglutide. Tirzepatide. GLP-1. GIP. Compounded medications. Online programs.

As a physician and the founder of Nova Wellness in Charlotte, I believe medical weight management should be much more personal than simply receiving medications in the mail.

GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medications can be valuable tools for appropriate patients, but they are still medical treatments. My approach at Nova Wellness is to use them thoughtfully, with physician guidance, individualized dosing and ongoing support.

What Is a GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally produced by the body that plays an important role in appetite, digestion and blood sugar regulation.

GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic some of these effects. For many, the most noticeable change is feeling satisfied with less food and experiencing fewer persistent thoughts about eating.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist and is one medication you may hear about when researching medical weight loss and is a great tool to add to good nutrition and daily movement.

What Is GIP—and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

GIP stands for glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide.

Tirzepatide is different from a traditional GLP-1 medication because it works on two pathways: GIP and GLP-1. That's why you may see it referred to as a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Both semaglutide and tirzepatide have changed the conversation around medical weight management, but that doesn't mean every person needs the same medication or the same dose. And that's an important distinction.

Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: Which Is Better for Weight Loss?

This is one of the most common questions I hear.

My answer is: the better option is the one that is medically appropriate for you.

When I evaluate someone for medical weight management at Nova Wellness, I'm looking beyond the number on the scale. I want to understand your medical history, medications, previous weight-loss attempts, nutrition, activity level, goals and how your body responds once treatment begins.

Two people can walk into Nova with the same weight and have very different needs.

That's why I don't believe medical weight management should be one-size-fits-all.

Why I Prefer a Physician-Guided GLP-1 Program

The popularity of GLP-1 medications has made access easier than ever. But easy access and good medical care aren't necessarily the same thing.

At Nova Wellness, you aren't simply signing up for a weight-loss injection.

You're entering a physician-guided, medical weight-management program.

That means we can talk about questions that matter:

Are you eating enough protein?

Are you maintaining muscle while losing weight?

Are you exercising appropriately?

Are you staying hydrated?

Are you having side effects?

Should your dose actually increase or are you doing well exactly where you are?

What happens when you reach your goal?

These conversations are an important part of treatment.

I don't believe the goal should be to rush every client to a higher dose. The goal is to find an effective, tolerable strategy that makes sense for the individual.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Is About More Than the Scale

One concern with any weight-loss program is focusing exclusively on pounds. Weight loss and health improvement are not always the same thing. When people lose weight, maintaining lean muscle becomes especially important. That's why I encourage adequate protein intake and regular physical activity, including strength training when able.

Hydration matters, too, especially around dose changes or when fatigue or gastrointestinal symptoms occur.

At Nova, we work with clients to use this period as an opportunity to establish habits that can continue well beyond active weight loss.

What Are the Side Effects of GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 Medications?

These medications aren't appropriate for everyone, and they aren't without potential side effects.

Common gastrointestinal side effects can include:

  • Nausea

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Decreased appetite

There are also more serious potential risks and specific contraindications that need to be discussed before treatment. This is another reason I believe medical supervision matters.

If you're experiencing side effects, the answer isn't necessarily to simply push through them or automatically increase your dose. Your treatment plan may need to be adjusted.

Do You Have to Stay on a GLP-1 Forever?

This is another question I hear frequently at Nova. There isn't one answer that applies to everyone.

Some clients have chronic medical conditions that benefit from maintenance doses and others may have different treatment goals or circumstances.

A good weight-management plan should include a conversation about what comes next.
